Becoming His Disciple

Greetings in the name of Jesus Christ, who calls us saying, "Follow Me!"

Gladys, who grew up amidst the prosperity of Australia, received clear confirmation from the Lord regarding her future through various scriptures and her daily work. Understanding the Lord's will, Gladys served as a Sunday School teacher and worked part-time in youth ministries. Whatever she did, she acted with the consciousness that she was doing it for the Lord. This sense of purpose was the primary reason Gladys moved from Australia to the state of Odisha in India.

Looking at Matthew, who was diligently performing his duties in tax collection, Jesus called out: "Follow Me" (Matt. 9:9). This first invitation from Jesus was to follow him, to be with him, and to know him. It is to cultivate such a relationship that he calls one to be a disciple. Discipleship is simply following after him.

The biblical scholar Matthew Henry states, "Disciples must first learn in Christ’s school to walk selflessly." The daily duty of a disciple is to continually die to self. That is the model Jesus demonstrated. Thus, discipleship is saying "Yes" to the Cross and "No" to self. Saying "Yes" to the Cross is often harder than saying "No" to self. Yet, one must do both to be a true disciple of Christ. Gladys Graham Staines became firm in saying "No" to her self-will.

Dear Youngsters reading this! May you always be disciples who follow Jesus Christ.
